Created for Global Games Jam 2015, Derek’s Quest was created to the theme “What do we do now” It was our first foray into games jams and I took on the role of gameplay designer. As part of this role, I conceived and implemented the mechanics into the game as well as producing level specific mechanics needed for the game to function.
The primary mechanic of Derek’s quest is the ability to switch between platforming and top-down gameplay at will. Building this posed quite a challenge as it was the first time I had tried to implement a system like this. However, the system garnered a positive reaction when the game was shown off at the end of the games jam. While the gameplay is not as deep or challenging as I personally would have liked, given the 48 hour time constraint of the games jam, the core mechanics provide a unique gameplay experience.
