Created for the Ukie Student Jam 2017, Photophobia was created to the theme “Empowerment” As part of a randomly selected team I took on the challenge of creating gameplay that both fit the theme, along with engaging the player. I was tasked with building and implementing the mechanics I had pitched to the team as well as overseeing artists who were building modular kits and other props for the project.
Photophobia uses light as the primary main mechanic. The idea was to allow the player to move light sources around at will creating safe areas for them to complete different puzzles. This was later refined into having specific areas in which the lights could be placed as it allowed for more control over how the puzzles would be handled by the player allowing for less exploitation of the extra mechanics such as picking up physics objects.
